Description

There's quite an interesting story to this icon, which shows a religious figure.

So, I don't really claim to be religious. When people ask me about it, I just say that I'm agnostic, but I think my version of agnosticism is totally different from the general definition. XD For me, I believe in all gods, but I don't particularly think one is superior, nor do I really worship one.

I kind of believe in the Greek concept of a kind of contract to the gods, and in my case, I often turn to Buddhism for it, mostly because that's the religion that I know quite well, and it's the only one that I more or less agree with. So I believe that you make a request of the gods and in return, if it gets fulfilled, you go through with your promise. Often, it involves a gift. The idea of pilgrimage has been here a while, so as mercenary as it all sounds, it's really not that new or blasphemous a notion. My sister promised to set a small statue of an elephant at the shrine of the Four-Faced Buddha in Thailand if she managed to get into a good university. She hasn't put the elephant there yet, though.

I can't really remember what it was I asked for, but it came true. Because I was short on funds at the time (>_>;), I promised that I would make and wear an icon of a Buddhist figure. There are really only two that are really well known in Buddhism, which is Lord Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy. For this icon, I worked with an image of the Goddess of Mercy, also known as Kuan Yin Pu Sa, or just Kuan Yin, because she's really always been one of my favourite goddesses. >_>

There are stories that she was a prince in her previous life, only she refused to take part in war and was killed because of it. She was reborn to become the Goddess of Mercy. She also plays a part in the ancient Chinese text, Journey to the West (Xi You Ji). When Monkey (Sun Wu Kong) wrecks havoc in Heaven, Lord Buddha imprisons him under a mountain. Kuan Yin intervenes on his behalf and promises to set him free provided he accompanies a monk on his travels and protect him.

I don't know that many stories, but I love listening to Buddhist chants. XD They're relaxing. >_> My mother consulted a fortune-teller when I was young, and she prophesied that I would become religious. >_> Personally, I can't see that happening. But the other fortunes seemed like that they might actually come true, so who knows? XD
