"If you're going to stay with me, you're going to have to make yourself useful," Eduard warned good-naturedly as he lifted Arnen off of the hulking animal.
Arnen blinked. The sentence had surprised him. "Um, what?" he said intelligently.
Eduard grinned and conveniently ignored the question. "Your first duty., my boy, will be to help me collect some dry leaves. Preferrably the crackly ones," he ordered with authority. "Oh, and you'll want to collect some branches too."
He strode off in the direction of the wood they had just come from and plucked a few thin branches off the ground and waved them at Arnen as an example. Arnen looked down at the ground in confusion, then hurriedly picked up a handful of leaves, eager to please.
Arnen ran a bit to catch up with Eduard. It was hard when you compared his short legs to that of the tall seventeen-year-old. It took even longer, considering the fact that while he was panting and trying to keep the red-head in sight, he had actually managed to swallow an insect of unknown origin and had been choking quietly in a corner for all of five minutes.
He realiased suddenly, as he bent down to examine a leaf in his hands, that what Eduard had said was true. "When you have an itch," he had said, "you leave it alone and it'll go away." The boy grinned to himself, glad that here was one truth that he was able to believe in.
Eduard stopped abruptly around sunset, nearly knocking the ten-year-old over and spilling his collection of twigs and branches. Arnen cluthced at them protectively, barely managing to see over the pile. "This'll do for the night," Eduard decided. He relieved the small boy from most of his collection and they walked back towards the stream together in a pleasant silence.
